How To Get Out There and Grab That Promotion

If you want a promotion but you don’t feel as though it is going to be automatically offered to you then there are ways for you to request it, and there are even ways for you to try and make yourself a more suitable candidate as well.

Be Great

This may sound simple, but you really do need to make sure that you are doing a great job. You need to have excellent reviews on your performance and you also need to have a good reputation as well. A lot of people wonder why they aren’t getting that much-needed promotion, but when it comes to their review, they don’t take note of the things that they can improve on. If you want to better your chances, you need to look at how you have done in the last few months. Think about it, is your performance above that of your other team members? What can you do to try and improve? When you have this information you can then begin to make the most out of your potential promotion and you can also make yourself more likely to get it as well.

Focus on Working Well in a Team

A lot of promotions are based on leadership but it’s important that you are a team player as well. If you have new people in the office, take the time to get to know them and also help them out when they need it. A lot of employees are scared to help others because they feel as though it may put the other person in a better position for the promotion but this is not the case at all. You may also want to try and volunteer for a committee if your company has one and you’ll also want to try and work with your boss as well. This will drastically increase your chances of you getting the job that you want and it is also a great way for you to show that you are a team player as well. Being a team player is all about knowing when to listen and when to talk as well, so be aware of this and do everything you can to meet this criteria.

Network with Others

If your company is having a party or if they are having a gathering then you may want to try and attend these. The more connected you are as a professional, the more chances you have of getting a promotion. The main reason for this is because the more other people know about you, the easier it will be for you to stand out and managers may even be more likely to promote you over someone else who they don’t know. Of course, you have to make sure that you do not sacrifice your professionalism when it comes to your socialising.

Education

If you want to better your chances of getting that promotion then consider taking an OSHA outreach online training course. This will help you to get ahead of your competition and it will also help you to know if you are doing the best that you can with the job that you have. If you have been in the same job for a number of years then there is a chance that you have missed out on some valuable training courses. The people who are just coming into the industry however will have probably been on these, so if you want to boost your chances then make sure that you are up to date on the educational training courses that are available for your industry.

Asking for a Promotion

If you have tried all of the above then it may be worth you asking for a promotion. You will want to make sure that your employer is aware of what you do and when you sit down and talk with them, it may bring some of your best qualities to light. If you are not quite sure how to ask for a promotion then let your boss know that you are interested and if they have no intentions of giving it to you then you may be better off looking for another job. If you do find another job that is more along the lines of what you’re looking for then there are things that you can do to try and make the transition much easier.

Talk with Your Boss

When looking for another job or when interviewing for another position in the company, it’s important that you let your boss know. You will also want them on your side as well because there is a high chance that they will be giving you a reference and the last thing you need is for this to go against you. It is far better that your boss hears your move from you when compared to hearing it from another team member.

Job Listings

A lot of companies will advertise a job listing internally first before they go on and advertise it externally. It is more than possible for some positions to be open for people who have your qualifications and this is a great way for you to climb the corporate ladder without having to leave the company. When you look at the job listing, make sure that you are more than aware of what the job entails before you go for it. You’ll also want to make sure that it is actually going to be a promotion for you when compared. If you know that the job is less money or if you know that you are not going to be challenged in your position then it may not be a good option for you and you may also find it difficult to progress in your next job as well. This is something that you’ll want to avoid if possible.

All in all, there are many ways for you to go out there and get that promotion, and even if you have to change your career branch, it is more than possible for you to make the change you need to take things to that next level.
