How to Better Your Career Potential and Finally Land that Dream Job

The sting of being passed over by someone else for that “dream job” can really hurt and cut rather deep. With enough rejection, you may even start to feel disillusioned, frustrated, and grow depressed about the notion that a dream job does in fact exist. According to a recent Gallup poll, 70% of people in the United States claim to “hate” their job and are suffering in terms of job satisfaction. That number may include you, which is why you’ve been on the hunt for that dream job.

So, how exactly can you break the cycle, how can you improve your odds of landing that dream job and become part of the 30% who do enjoy what they do and feels satisfied at work? Here we’ll take a look at tips and ways you can go about bettering your career potential, which can help you to finally land the job of your dreams.

Make Sure You Have the Educational Requirements

One of the most effective tips for landing your dream job is to first make sure you have the educational requirements necessary to perform the job. This doesn’t just mean that you need to be registered or licensed to perform a job, it also means you have the knowledge and foundations to understand what the job entails.

Take, for example, the master of public administration program through a prestigious school like the University of San Francisco, which is meant to prepare students to become effective civic leaders and managers. What you will learn through the degree program will give you those foundational skills, knowledge, and techniques needed in order to understand your role in the job. Potential employers will look at that degree and know that you’ve got what it takes to do the job well.

Consider an Internship to Get Your Foot in the Door

Sometimes it’s just a matter of getting your foot in the door in order to jumpstart your career. Sure, it’s not your “dream job”, but it can be the path that leads to it. Internships give people a chance to work in the industry, get hands-on experience, learn new skills, and do a little networking. All of this will help to beef up your resume and help you to make contacts in your desired industry.

Apply for Many Jobs and Positions

Everyone is familiar with the saying “don’t put all your eggs in the same basket” and this can certainly apply to job hunting. Rather than putting all your energy and focus into applying for one job, spread yourself out. Apply to a number of jobs in various companies, and even with different job titles and responsibilities. You want to cover as many bases as possible and not rule anything out too quickly. Once you’ve sent out applications then consider having someone else do it for you. If you want to work in sales then find a sales recruiting firm that can hopefully connect you with your dream position.

Keep a Positive Attitude

The final tip sounds like the simplest at all but in reality, it can prove to be the trickiest. Your attitude will play a huge role in how successful your job hunting is. Keeping a positive and determined attitude will help to push you forward and ensure that you are successful.

I found that by taking small and short courses related to the job I wanted, got me my next big position.

I did this too Leone. I got a bit sore when I kept getting passed over for promotion, and then I decided to up my game and give them real reasons to accept me. I did quite a few certificates in management areas that I knew I would be lacking in and presented them as part of my argument.

This is some sound advice ladies! Also, by scrutinizing what that person does in their role as well as their current qualifications, I think you have all bases covered.

Luckily, we had a good HR department who offered me a job description which was always used for the role I was after, plus the qualifications they would only accept from interviewees.
