How to Start a Small Clothing Business

There are many reasons why people start their own businesses. Sometimes, people get tired of the corporate grind. Other times, it becomes a necessity to make extra income for the household. For others, they just want the opportunity for a fresh start.

Starting your own clothing company can be a great chance to express your creativity. You can design and stock products that appeal to the customer base that you have in mind. You can keep your own hours and spend your days doing something that you love.

Here are a few tips to help you start your own clothing business.

Know Your Niche

Every clothing company has to be unique. There are many choices for consumers to pick from. One of the first things you’ll need to do is discover your niche. What makes your business unique? Why should shoppers buy from you versus your competitors? Once you find your niche, you can start planning for your company’s future.

Build a Business Plan

Now that you know what you’re going to do and who you’re going to market to, the next step is to create your own business plan. This includes setting goals and timelines and planning a budget for your fixed and variable costs. Decide if you’re going to design all of your clothing or buy from local or national manufacturers. This is a good time to start thinking about pricing structures, and how much space you will need for displays and inventory.

Get Organized

With a solid business, you can start to organize. You’ll need to pick a location, even if your business is strictly going to be on the Internet. You need somewhere to work and store inventory. Other things to consider are business financing, how many employees you’ll need, how to effectively market your business, insurance and your product lines. This process can be challenging, but it’s very necessary to get your operation up and running smoothly.

Another big thing to consider is how you’ll manufacture your clothing range. There are two clear routes you can go down: CMT (cut, make, trim) or FPP (full production package.) Both have pros and cons; and the route you take will ultimately depend on what you are producing and your budget. For more information we suggest you read this article: CMT Vs FPP: Which is Best Method For Your Business. This should give you a much more in depth idea.

Start Work

Once you’re organized, the real fun begins! If you’re going to be selling original products, you can now start designing and creating them. You may want to create a few samples or test pieces before you make more. Get feedback from product users that you can use to make any tweaks or design changes that you need to.

Market Your Products and Your Brand

Once you have products that you know will sell, it’s time to let the general public know who you are and what you have to offer. Start thinking about promotions or special introductory offers. Also, decide what outlets you’re going to use for your marketing and promotion efforts. Social media, your own website, television, radio and word of mouth are just some of the ways that new businesses attempt to generate interest.

Once you’ve done your marketing, determined your pricing, customer service policies and gotten a handle on your financing, you’re ready to open for business! It takes a lot of work to get started, but with enough resources and determination, you can get the job done. Just make sure you stay focused and don’t let problems or unexpected issues stop you.

For every successful business, there are dozens of others who fail because they didn’t plan for their future or didn’t execute their plans very well. You will definitely have good days and bad days, but the perseverance and determination are important to your company’s success.

I attended a brand seminar recently and heard a theory that there’s nothing new left to create except some new-brand fabrics with futuristic characteristics. All you have to do to make your business unique is take an idea that has already been implemented and add something to it, like your personal touch or something. Any thoughts?

I think this is one of the ways to create something new. We have driverless cars nowadays that were still created on the basis of a construction on wheels. It’s quite the same vibe.

I also recommend giving more attention to second-hand stores. In case you have no idea what kind of a brand you want to create, you can always take up second-hand. They’re also becoming quite popular in the latest years and involve lots of benefits.
